What is a mid-facelift ?

Mid-face areas such as cheeks, cheekbones and lower eyelids are listed as the first areas that are noticed when looking. The process of correcting deformities in these areas by replacing the deformed or lost soft tissue is called mid-face lift surgery.

Why is a mid-facelift performed?

Areas such as around the eyes, cheekbones, around the mouth, nasal wings, lines connecting the lips and nose are in the middle of the face and are the most prominent. These areas are also known as the areas that age the quickest and are most affected by environmental, hormonal and genetic factors. The most noticeable deformities are in this area in the middle of the face. These include sagging, tear troughs, drooping eyelids, loss of cheekbones, etc. Cosmetic products used in this area are not effective and permanent. The most effective solution is a surgical procedure called a mid-facelift .

This procedure can be used when the line between the nostrils and the edge of the lip descends down the face to the chin, when the cheekbones are weakened by age and environmental factors, and when there is a loss of fatty tissue under the skin of the face. In addition, if there is abnormal deepening or hollowing under the eyes, mid-facelift   surgery can be used to correct these problems (deformities).

Is a mid-facelift permanent?

The procedures used in mid-face lift surgery are often permanent. But of course, the aging process continues due to gravity. However, it is possible to go back an average of 5 to 10 years with mid-facelift surgery. In addition, if the procedure is carried out by professionals, the risk of complications is reduced and the permanence and effectiveness of the procedure is visible for up to 10 years.

What are the techniques used in mid-facelift surgery?

Mid-face lift surgery varies according to the area involved, the patient’s complaints and the extent of the deformity. This variety requires different techniques for surgery.

*Subciliary (lower eyelid) mid-facelift

The most commonly preferred method of mid-face lift surgery is known as the sublisiary approach. The aim is to reach the middle of the face with an incision made at the base of the lash on the lower eyelid. All the middle layers of soft tissue from the bottom of the eyelid to the bone membrane and from the bottom of the bone membrane to the edges of the lips are loosened and lifted as a block (completely). As a permanent and strong tissue is obtained, the effectiveness of this method is visible.

*Endoscopic mid-facelift

The instruments used in this method of mid-facelift surgery are different. During this operation, imaging is performed using a micro-camera system called an endoscope. The use of imaging during surgery allows the procedure to be performed with smaller incisions. This reduces the risk of complications during the operation, increases the success of the operation and has a positive effect on the healing process.

How is a mid-facelift performed?

A mid-facelift is an operation performed under general anaesthetic and lasts on average 1.5 – 2 hours. The procedures such as replacing the lost fat tissue, tightening the tissues, tightening them and removing the excess skin that causes sagging of the skin are performed through incisions in various places such as the base of the eyelashes and the edge of the ear, depending on the patient’s condition. The stitches are placed behind the ear, under the eyelashes or on the scalp so that the surgical scar is not visible.

What is the recovery process after mid-face lift surgery?

A mid-face lift is a highly effective, comfortable and safe procedure when performed by professionals. However, there are a number of things that need to be considered to minimise the risks after the procedure and to support the healing process. These are as below:

– The surgical area should not be exposed to water for an average of 3 days.

– As with almost all surgical procedures, blood thinners, drinks or supplements should not be taken after a mid-facelift.

– Heavy exercise and strenuous activities should be avoided for about 2-3 weeks and a more sedentary lifestyle should be adopted during this period.

– For an average of 1 month, pillows higher than heart level should be preferred, lying face down should be avoided and the facial area should be protected from possible impacts.

– Smoking should be avoided.

– Ice should be applied frequently to the face to reduce swelling and bruising.

– The face should be protected from the sun for the first 3 months after the operation.

– After the operation there may be bruising, swelling, temporary loss of feeling, burning or mild pain in the face. This is considered normal and can be controlled with medication prescribed by the doctor.

– Post-operative effects such as swelling, bruising and pain disappear within 1 week – 10 days and the stitches are usually removed at the end of the first week following the operation.  After the stitches are removed, the normalisation process begins.

– The patient’s ability to achieve the face shape that fully meets the patient’s expectations of the surgery is achieved at the end of an average of 3 months.
